ICAM Academy

Our training goes beyond theory — it's about preparing participants to investigate real incidents with confidence and competence.

Our ICAM Investigation courses are designed to build a deep understanding of the ICAM process steps, equipping learners with the practical skills needed to gather evidence, identify causes, and develop meaningful, risk-based recommendations that drive genuine change.

We offer both in-house and public programs, tailored for all levels within your organisation — from frontline supervisors to senior leaders. Each course blends structured learning with hands-on investigation activities, ensuring participants leave ready to apply what they've learned in the field.

Recognising that learning doesn't end with a single course, we also provide advanced and refresher programs for experienced investigators.

Our goal is to help every investigator progress from competence to mastery — building safer, smarter workplaces through better investigations.

Courses offered

ICAM Investigator (2 days + pre-work)

ICAM Investigator builds on the fundamentals and prepares participants to actively conduct and support workplace investigations. Through a blend of theory and applied learning, participants deepen their understanding of incident causation, the ICAM methodology, and the skills required to contribute effectively as an investigation team member.

The course emphasises structured evidence gathering, logical analysis, and the development of credible, defensible findings that focus on system improvement rather than blame.

Participants gain practical investigation capabilities, including investigation planning, analysis of evidence, contributing factor identification, and the formulation of effective recommendations. By the end of the course, participants are equipped to lead low-level investigations and play a strong role in more complex investigations. The course reinforces how robust and effective ICAM investigations directly support risk management, strengthen control effectiveness, and enhance organisational learning, ensuring investigations translate into meaningful safety improvements.

ICAM Investigator Advanced (2 Days + Online Learning)

ICAM Investigator Advanced is designed for investigators who will lead or facilitate complex investigations and influence safety outcomes at an organisational level. This course refines advanced investigation and facilitation skills, strengthens analytical capability, and builds confidence in guiding teams through the ICAM process. Participants explore deeper aspects of causation, human factors, and systemic influences, with a strong emphasis on producing high-quality, defensible investigation outputs.

The course also focuses on influencing organisational change, supporting leaders to translate investigation findings into sustainable risk controls and system improvements. Participants develop capability in facilitating ICAM workshops, managing stakeholder dynamics, and leading initial emergency response in line with BSBWHS515 requirements. With formative assessment and a post-course workbook, this course ensures participants can apply advanced ICAM skills confidently and effectively in real-world contexts.

ICAM Essentials (1 Day)

ICAM Essentials is a practical, foundation-level course designed to give participants a clear understanding of how and why organisations investigate incidents using the ICAM methodology. The course introduces core investigation principles, incident causation theory, and the structured ICAM process, helping participants understand how incidents arise from multiple interacting factors rather than single causes. Participants learn how ICAM supports a risk-based approach to safety by identifying contributing factors across People, Environment, Equipment, Procedures, and Organisation.

This course equips frontline personnel and support roles to contribute meaningfully to investigations. Participants leave with a clear understanding regarding the role of investigation team members, how to provide accurate information and evidence, and how quality investigations lead to stronger risk controls and safer systems of work. ICAM Essentials builds the capability to confidently participate in investigations while strengthening organisational learning from everyday events and supporting a culture of continuous learning.
